SKILL ACQUISITION TRAINING BY HOPE YET WELFARE FOUNDATION

Introduction

Young people are an important and integral part of the society that cannot be done away with. When they are actively and positively engaged in the community, they can be a catalyst in the development and growth of society. To turn them into agents of change in our communities; it is necessary that they should be provided with civil education and skill acquisition. The application sent by Hope Yet welfare foundation and Small Grant Programme is for a project on civil education and skill acquisition for youth in Zonkwa, Zongo Local Government area of Kaduna State. The skill acquisition component of this project will focus on training of this youth on viable vocational skills and their subsequent empowerment. These identified vocational skills are as follows; tailoring, carpentry, welding, mechanic, and hairdressing.

Objectives of the skill acquisition component

  • To improve the lives of youth in Zonkwa, Zongo Kataf LGA of Kaduna state.
  • To transform youth in Zonkwa into agents of development in their communities.
  • To train and empower youth with viable vocational skills.

Target

This training targeted at 35 youth who are spread across the various vocational activities mentioned previously. These beneficiaries were spread as follows:

  • Tailoring – 6
  • Welding – 8
  • Carpentry – 5
  • Mechanical work – 10
  • Hairdressing – 6

Methodology

This skill acquisition training is carried out in the form enumerated below:

  • Identification and registration of beneficiaries: Thirty-Five youths were selected for the skill acquisition program.
  • Entrepreneurial/vocational training for beneficiaries are learning the rudiments of entrepreneurship and general knowledge on their respective vocational skills. This training is organized and monitored by the Hope Yet Welfare Foundation with the technical involvement of the National Directorate of Employment office in Zonkwa with whom the Hope Yet Welfare Foundation is already in tandem.
  • Attachment of youth on apprenticeship to identified artisans: Hope Yet Welfare Foundation has already identified artisans within the community for placement of beneficiaries after the initial training. Beneficiaries will undergo full apprenticeship in their selected vocational skill for the required number of years. Hope Yet welfare Foundation is presently monitoring the training of beneficiaries.
  • Start – up for beneficiaries: After graduation, Hope-Yet always provide beneficiaries with equipment to enable them start up their own workshops.

Expected Outcomes

Beneficiaries will acquire vocational skills

Beneficiaries will be empowered to engage in economic activities
